Resting nearby the fairy tale Chateau at Montreuil-Bellay, the gîte at Le Vieux Moulin takes over the first floor of the later extension of the beautiful old 1840s Mill house. Surrounded by the River Thouet and an old mill stream, the property sits on an island and is perfect for those wanting a relaxing break.
Le Vieux Moulin is situated in a beautiful and usually tranquil area at the side of the river, accessed down a quiet lane. The accommodation is on the first floor of the mill house and offers very spacious and comfortable living with stunning views from the lounge and balcony over the River Thouet and surrounding countryside. A haven for wildlife with regular sightings of kingfishers, woodpeckers, hoopoe, golden oriole, red squirrel and deer and many others. The cuckoo heralds the beginning of spring every year along with the chorus of frogs, nightingales sing in the evening and night and later in the season you will hear Tawny and Barn owls during the night.
There are bicycles available for you to use. There is also canoe hire available in Montreuil Bellay and in Saumur, fishing can be found along the riverbank just outside the Mill area and locally at a nearby lake, and we will be happy to advise you on this. The area also has abundant walks and we provide maps of these walks for you to enjoy.
The gite comprises of 140 square metres of living space perfect for two people or a family of four to enjoy a really comfortable holiday. It comprises of a fully fitted kitchen which is very well equipped for all your holiday needs and has an oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge freezer, Nespresso coffee machine and filter coffee machine, etc.
The lounge/dining area is equipped with Stressless leather sofas and chairs, large dining table, and television with Freeview, Netflix, Disney + etc (please bring your login details). Leading off the lounge and accessed from multiple french doors is the private balcony which is equipped with gas barbeque, tables and chairs for ‘al-fresco’ dining. Also leading off the lounge area is a conservatory with rattan garden furniture and sun loungers.
The accommodation further comprises of two double bedrooms with televisions. One overlooking the garden area, the other with spectacular views of the river. There is a large bathroom with bath and separate walk in shower, separate toilet and washbasin.
There is ample parking in the grounds and various seating areas around the property and by the river for you to use if you wish.
Quality bed linen and towels are included in the price. Central heating is available in the colder months at cost if you should require it. The only additional cost is gite cleaning. Traditionally the end of stay cleaning in gites is done by the guest, but like a lot of other holiday accommodation we now offer an end of stay clean at a small cost which you can take advantage of if you want a really relaxing holiday.
The mill house is situated down a country lane leading to the river yet is only 3km south of Montreuil-Bellay with its beautiful chateau and good restaurants and shops. 15km away is the picturesque and vibrant town of Saumur for you to explore. The gite is well located for visiting the many chateaux of the Loire Valley and the area offers a wealth of opportunities for tasting its famous wines, walking, cycling, canoeing, fishing, golf and much more.
Unfortunately, due to the proximity of the river the gite is unsuitable for children under 12 years of age unless supervised at all times. The gite is on the first floor and is accessed by stairs.

It is well-served by motorway networks and daily flights, making it so easy to reach from wherever you are, however you choose to get here with airports in Nantes, Poitiers, Tours and Angers and ferry ports from Cherbourg to Calais all serving the area well, and don’t forget the Eurostar from the UK to Paris and then onto Tours or Angers where you can hire a car for your holiday.
